I don't think Varese was being "cheap" for the hell of it.

It was likely trying to find a way to release the music in a way that was still marginally profitable.

I see a couple of other minor issues with the release, such as missing brass and woodwind overlays from "I've Fallen and I Can't Beam Up", and a missing overlay from the start of "Jehosafats", but the fact that we have around 90% of the complete score to the movie, and something a little different from the OST as packaging, I still find the Deluxe Edition to be far superior a presentation to the OST.

It's not a perfect release of the score, but it's still a good one.
