I’d say it’s among his more underrated scores, but it’s more fair perhaps to say it’s under-heard.

For those who missed the Kritzerland album and Intrada’s recent suite, Elmer Bernstein recorded a good presentation in the 1980s as part of this terrific album:

Part of my affection for that program comes from its focus on several of MR’s lesser-known scores, not just this but also Plymouth Adventure, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, and the middle segment of The Story of Three Loves, the latter a rare excursion for the composer into the realm of fantasy.
