> The Lego Batman Movie (2017) - ****
Hysterical movie, wonderful and intelligent score. I need to rewatch the film!
> Genius Season 1: Einstein (2017) - ***
Eh. I listened, enjoyed, can't recall a note now. Very much the bog-standard RC period drama sound.
> Geostorm (2017) - **
This whole situation is just infuriating. Toprak had this opportunity snatched away from her, and this wasn't likely a situation where there were big disagreements, where a fresh start would be best. (Then again, considering what a turkey the film was, maybe she wasn't injured by the lost opportunity. Now, the lack of assignments pouring in after Captain Marvel, that's teeth-gnawing.) And that's some venom over a replacement score that's really just Okay. It's standard RC action, love it or hate it. (And it benefits from comparison to the upcoming 12 Strong...)
> The Crown Season 2 (2017) - ***
Haven't heard, kiiiinda wanna check it out? Probably will get around to it sometime.
> Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) - **
I was startled to see this rated so low. Figured it would be a solid 3.5-4 from you! Consensus at the time, to my memory, was that Jablonsky injected melodic elements well into the action soundscape, though the absence of the original themes continued to be irritating. (And that's all my impression too, having listened a few years ago.)
Also, you sly dog, you *almost* got me interested in seeing another Bayformers movie!
The followup, Bumblebee, would finally shake the MV/RC association with Dario Marianelli delivering a delightful romp that delivers with modern action and melodic sensibilities. The film is also wonderful!
> The Dark Tower (2017) - ***
And this I was startled to see you rate so high! I found it profoundly bland. While it showed more orchestral threads, it lost the intense, raw personality that made MMFR so fun (and to a lesser degree 300RoaE tolerable in parts). The speculation that his orchestrators may have had a hefty hand echoes similar statements from as far back as Elfman's early days, but as always, who knows. It's a slippery question! It's a score that epitomizes OKay (and illustrates the need for judicious albums; this over-an-hour CD should have been trimmed to more like 40, concentrate on the fantasy highlights.)
88 minutes, wow. That's shocking, and I never knew that.
> Ferdinand (2017) - ****
> conducted by John Powell
Woah, I never noticed that. Am I right in thinking this is his only "conducted by" credit?
> dedicated to
> Melinda Lerner & Oliver Powell
That's sweet, and bittersweet. Love his tradition of dedications.
A wonderful score for a supposed-to-be-good film I haven't seen. I remember hearing some say this one was derivative of his past works, firmly in his comfort zone, and while that's not wrong... ah come on! It's a spirited romp, summoning all the joyful energy I think of when I hear "Powell animation." It's a fitting conclusion to his time working with Blue Sky, and while I would have loved to hear what Spies In Disguise via Powell would sound like, Shapiro's score for that is quite good.

Oh god, is Balfe's MI up next? I have *opinions* about that!
