> Besides providing the pretty-darn-good main theme song for this show, Walker was hands off during most of the early episodes. She returned for a major arc with the Jack Kirby-created New Gods and Darkseid, and provided some of the weirdest, most electronic, grooviest work of her career. They really are eccentric cues, and the album is worth seeking out specifically for the Walker cues. The rest of the music is good… but if you’ve just finished exploring the entirety of “Batman: The Animated Series” like I did, it kinda pales in comparison. Her stuff I would give four stars to. Everything else…

> Score: ***

I think Walker only scored seven episodes of the show, including a whopping ZERO from the first season, mainly because of how many other shows she was scoring/supervising at the time. As such, I think you're doing a disservice to the great work her team did on this one. The goofy Mister Mxyzptlk material (and NBNW-inspired chase finale), Kristopher Carter's brutal Apokolips invasion two-parter (and its surprisingly quiet final track), the soaring Supergirl intro two-parter, McCuistion's massive Green Lantern theme with those Goldsmithian electronics around it, McCuistion's three-part Batman/Superman team-up (with the characters' themes entwining in counterpoint at the end)...I could go on.

A lot of these moments come to mind without having to listen to the scores, which I think points to another aspect: this remains perhaps the most underrated of the DC animated TV shows, and one that wasn't afraid to let its music drive a good many scenes.

Walker's score for the two-part series finale (one that originally wasn't written as such) is also surprisingly dark for what's supposed to be a kid's show. The earthshaking final confrontation with Darkseid probably scared a few after-school viewers back in the day.

Oh yeah. The hidden gem of Walker's career.

> Willard

> Score: ****1/2

A downright nasty score that's almost too clever for its own good.
