I think Far and Away tends to get lost amongst the heavy hitters fron that period, namely Hook, Jurassic Park and Schlinder's List. I remember having a similar reaction to you when I first discovered it. It's an absolute beautiful thrilling gem of a score.

I also highly recommend the violin and orchestra concert suite he wrote for the score. You can find it on that 1969-1999 compilation (on Spotify) with Itzhak Perlman on violin.

P.S. If you want to hear an Irish accent, don't listen to Tom Cruise in that movie because I don't even know what planet that character is from, nevermind the country. Ah begorrah and bejaysus, top of the mornin' to ya and the rest of the day to yurself, sure I'll be away now with a twinkle in me eye and a feather in me cap, oh diddle-dee-dum!! smile
