• Now Playing: Super-what?

I decided to face my fears and listened to “Look Up” to get a taste of this.

You know those kids who got turned on to film scores from watching superhero movies and who make these “EPIC” reimaginings of popular movie themes, as if the originals weren’t epic enough? And it’s all thick, simple harmonies, blaring brass, chugging string ostinati, massive synth choir, and movie trailer percussion?

It’s like one of those kids was given the gig to score Gunn’s movie.

It’s such a dumb misunderstanding of what made Williams’ music great. And it adds in that Man of Steel, over-the-top percussion, to make sure you know you’re in an EPIC MOVIE.

I look back on Ottman’s Superman Returns fondly. He understood the assignment and paid respect to Williams’ original music, while adding striking themes of his own, like Luthor’s theme and the melody for Superman’s humanity.

I will try to listen to Superman from beginning to end in the coming days, because your comment about the guitar stuff intrigued me, but the four or so cues I’ve listened to from the end are rancid.

Yikes. Super yikes.
